Pest Bird Control Services and Bird Proofing

We offer a range of pest control solutions to customers dealing with bird problems. This means that whatever the nature of your pest bird problem, our expert technicians will be able to select the most effective measures for your situation.

These are the most common solutions we use during our bird related pest control:

  • Bird Spikes
  • Bird Netting
  • Bird Trapping
  • Bird Wire
  • Deterrents
  • Falconry
  • Nest Removal

Bird Spikes

Rather than actual spikes that can illegally harm or kill birds, our bird ‘spikes’ are actually harmless metal prongs attached to a polycarbonate base that work by simply preventing birds such as pigeons and gulls from landing.

Our bird spike strips are highly flexible and can be placed in a wide range of locations including window sills, ledges, signs, and gutters.

Our systems are discreet and very difficult to see for casual observers meaning you can protect your building without compromising its aesthetics.

Bird Netting

Bird netting is hugely effective especially in commercial properties at preventing birds from reaching potential roosting locations such as warehouse rafters.

It comes in a wide range of different colours and materials and can be adapted to suit a range of locations from large office buildings to a single plot in a domestic garden.

With smart UV technology, when installed on a commercial premises, these nets will allow plenty of light through to your property whilst blocking harmful UV light waves from reaching your staff.

They key to effective bird pest control is proper installation.

Our pest controllers are highly trained in safe and effective pest prevention techniques, providing you with expert bird control and limiting harm to bird populations.

Solar Panel Bird Proofing

Protect your solar panels from bird populations with Clark Pest Control Glasgow

We install effective solar panel bird proofing to stop nuisance bird populations from nesting under your panels.

This prevents damage from bird activity, prevents health risks, as well as secondary infestations from insects attracted to nesting materials.

Bird Wire Systems

Preserve your building’s appearance while keeping it safe from pest bird populations with bird wire systems.

These humane bird deterrents create an unstable surface for birds to land, encouraging them to move onto a different location.

Bird Deterrent Solutions

We can also install a range of other deterrents that can be effective in preventing birds from choosing your property to roost near.

These include decoy predators such as model owls, hawk kites, and motion detecting sprinklers.

Unfortunately, once birds get used to these and realise they offer no real threat, they may return and these ‘gadgets’ are a less permanent solution to spikes or netting.

Bird Free Gel

Bird gel can be installed to listed buildings where wire and bird spikes are not possible.

The deterrent does not alter the structure or appearance of the building, and is close to invisible from the ground level.

Bird gel might look like small round disks to humans, but to birds it takes on the appearance of fire. This can help prevent problem bird species from nesting or roofing on building structures.

Expert Removal

In some cases where a bird infestation has grown so large that deterrents are not enough, we offer some more specialised bird removal methods.

These Include:

  • Bird Shooting – Carried out by highly trained marksmen
  • Bird Trapping
  • Falconry
  • Nest removal

Why are birds considered pests?

For many, birds are not the first species that comes to mind when they think of pest control.

However, pest birds roosting on your property can cause just as much distress and health and safety concerns as other pests such as rats, mice, and insects and their removal is essential.

Just some of the risks associated with local pest birds include:

  • Spreading diseases such as salmonella and psittacosis
  • Damaging property
  • Reducing workplace safety by creating slippery surfaces
  • Increasing the risk of further pest activity such as insects and rodents
  • Loud noise and general disruption to quality of life

Disease Spreading

Pest birds are prolific disease carriers and carry many dangerous pathogens that are spread through both direct contact and bird droppings.

Just some of the diseases that are spread by pest birds include:

Histoplasmosis

A fungal disease that thrives in wet areas with high levels of organic matter present, such as pigeon dropping covered surfaces.

Histoplasmosis can lead to fever, muscle cramps and pain, a dry cough, and fatigue.

Salmonella

A bacteria spread by some pest birds through their faeces and can be transferred to humans through either direct contact with droppings or through surface contamination.

When there is a large population of pest birds present in one location, birds will stand in and walk through salmonella contaminated faeces, that is then transferred to any surface they land on.

Salmonella causes symptoms including stomach cramps and diarrhoea and can lead to hospitalisation in extreme cases.

Psittacosis

A highly infectious air-borne bacterial pathogen, psittacosis (caused by the bacteria chlamydia psittacii) is spread to humans through the inhalation of dust containing particles of feathers or droppings from infected birds.

According to the BPCA, research suggests as much as 49% of all feral pigeons in the UK are infected with the Chlamydia psittaci, which causes an infection called Ornithosis when passed to humans.

Ornithosis causes a wide range of symptoms and health problems for humans including blurred vision, headaches, fever, and severe weakness. In rare cases, it can also result in death.

Dry droppings from feral pigeons can become airborne in the form of small particles. If pest birds are nesting inside a property’s ventilation system, air-borne diseases can quickly spread creating a ‘sick building’.

If you are a business owner, you are responsible for the health and wellbeing of your employees whilst they are at your place of work and failure to tackle a pest bird infestation that causes illness can result in legal disputes and penalties.

Therefore, if you discover a commercial pest control problem involving birds it is vital that you contact a professional company such as Clark Pest Control immediately to protect yourself as well as your employees.

Property Damage

Besides spreading a range of dangerous diseases pest bird infestations can cause structural damage to property over time.

Bird faeces is extremely toxic and corrosive and can irreversibly erode roof and other structural surfaces over time.

Even a thin layer of bird droppings has been shown to cut in half the lifespan of a property’s roof causing leakages and collapse if left untreated.

By blocking drains and ventilation shafts when nesting, pest birds can also increase the risk of flooding and building fires meaning that early identification and deterrent installation is key to protecting your property.

Protect your health and protect your property with our professional guano cleaning services.

Secondary Infestations

One of the more overlooked consequences of a pest bird infestation is the significant risk of secondary pest infestations caused by birds nesting.

When birds build their nests in loft spaces, guttering, and on window ledges, they create an attractive food source for insects and other common pests.

Birds themselves are attractive to blood sucking insects such as fleas and bed bugs whilst their droppings are attractive to mould loving pests such as cockroaches.

When attempting to locate a birds nest, it is possible that you or our professional pest control technicians will come across rodents such as mice or rats, a wasps nest, or ant problem as these species often target the same shelter and warmth that attracts birds to your property.

At Clark Pest Control, all our pest control professionals are fully trained in insect prevention and wasp nest removal as well as pest bird management, so they will be able to select the most effective method to deal with both infestations without the need for multiple call out charges.

Pest Bird Species

There are a number of birds that can cause pest problems in Glasgow but the most common species that we provide pest solutions for are:

  • Feral pigeons (Columba livia)
  • Gulls (Laridae)
  • Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris)
  • House Sparrows (Passer domesticus)
  • Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)
  • Crows (Corvidae)

Gulls (Laridae)

Gull species are often seen as a coastal problem, leading to their naming as ‘seagulls’, however, they have become an increasingly large problem in urban areas due to the easy access to food sources and shelter.

There are six species of common breeding gulls in the UK.

These are:

  • Herring Gulls
  • Lesser Black-backed Gull
  • Greater Black-backed Gull
  • Black-headed Gull
  • Common gull
  • Kittiwake

Once gulls have found a suitable nesting site, they will often return there year after year so without putting deterrents in place you may find yourself facing a gull problem for several years.

Gulls can live for up to 25 years and can grow very large during their lives, up to 80 cm in length, meaning that heavy duty equipment is often required.

During breeding season, gulls become extremely messy and noisy, lowering the quality of life for those who live nearby. They also become very aggressive to those who approach their eggs or hatchlings.

This behaviour usually peaks around common hatching times that occur between late-May and early-June every year.

Whilst gulls will rarely make physical contact with humans they will swoop and screech nearby which can be extremely distressing.

Killing gulls is a last resort measure that is regulated very strictly, and extensive permission and a licence is required to do so, meaning you should never attempt this without getting professional advice first.

Feral pigeons (Columba livia)

Feral pigeons, or rock doves, are one of the most common pest bird species found in urban areas across the UK.

Pigeons can produce as many as 6 or 7 broods or 1/2 eggs per year, so a population of birds that has begun to settle on or near your property can quickly escalate.

A single pigeon can produce as much as 12kg of droppings in just one year posing a significant range of related health concerns and property damage.

As well as spreading diseases pigeon faeces can create a slippery surface raising the risk of accidents and workplace hazards.

This makes bird proofing solutions vital for the interest of public safety.

Other Pest Bird Species

Pigeons and gulls are the most common species tackled by our pest control technicians, but we also provide solutions for other birds.

These include:

  • Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris)
  • House Sparrows (Passer domesticus)
  • Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)
  • Crows (Corvidae)
