Bird Wire Systems

Bird Wire Systems

Pigeons and seagulls roost on ledges, sills, parapets, and rooflines. Their droppings cause damage, create health and safety risks, and make buildings look neglected. But not every property suits bird spikes or bird netting.

On listed buildings, historic buildings, and high-profile buildings where appearance matters, you need a bird deterrent that works without being seen. That’s what a bird post and wire system does.

How a bird deterrent wire system works

Bird wire systems (also known as post and wire bird systems) consists of thin stainless steel posts with a spring-tensioned, nylon-coated stainless steel wire that runs in between. Posts vary in heights and the wires create an unstable surface that birds can’t settle on.

When a pigeon or seagull tries to perch, the wire shifts under their weight and they lose balance.

It’s a humane way to deter birds from roosting and nesting on buildings without trapping or harming them.

The discomfort encourages the pest birds to move on somewhere more stable.

At Clark Pest Control, our systems use grade stainless steel throughout, which resists corrosion and weathers well even in exposed locations.

The low-profile design means the system is virtually invisible from street level, which is why it’s the preferred bird control solution for heritage and high-profile buildings.

Where bird post and wire is installed

Bird wire systems can be fitted to almost any flat or narrow surface where pest birds are landing.

Our bird control technicians install post and wire on:

  • Window sills and ledges
  • Ledges and parapets
  • Roof ridges and roof edges
  • Signage and fascia boards
  • Pipes, beams, and structural steelwork
  • Chimney stacks

The system is particularly well suited to buildings with narrow ledges and decorative stonework where bird spikes would look out of place. It also works well on long runs like parapet walls and roof ridges where a clean sightline matters.

Bird wire vs bird spikes

Both bird spikes and pigeon wire prevent birds from landing, but they suit different situations.

Bird spikes are highly effective on ledges and sills, but they’re visible. On a modern commercial building, that’s fine. But on a heritage building, a listed church, or a hotel with a prominent facade, spikes can look intrusive and may not be permitted by conservation officers.

Bird deterrent wire does the same job but without the visual impact.

The trade-off is that wire needs slightly more maintenance, because the tension springs need occasional checking. Spikes are fit-and-forget.

But if the building’s appearance is a priority, wire is the better bird deterrent solution.

Bird wire vs bird netting

Bird netting excludes birds from an entire area and is the right choice where you need to stop birds getting inside a building.

This is great for large, open spaces such as:

  • Loading bays
  • Warehouse voids
  • Covered walkways

Wire don’t do this. But they do deter birds from landing on specific surfaces.

If your bird problem is pigeons or seagulls perching on external ledges and fouling the facade, a post and wire system to prevent birds from landing is the better approach.

If birds are nesting inside a roof void or accessing an enclosed space, netting is what you need.

Deter pigeons and seagulls from your building

Pigeon wire is designed to deter pigeons and seagulls, crows, starlings, and most larger birds.

The system works by preventing birds from landing and making the surface impossible to perch on, which forces them elsewhere.

For properties with a persistent pigeon infestation or a recurring seagull problem, post and wire is an effective bird control solution that keeps them off the building permanently.

Once installed, the wire prevents birds from perching or roosting on the treated surfaces.

For smaller birds like sparrows, bird spikes or bird netting may be more appropriate, as the gap between the wire spacing can sometimes allow them through and rest easily.

How we install bird post and wire

Clark Pest Control starts every job with a free survey.

Our bird control technicians inspect the building, identify where pest birds are landing, check for an active nest or bird droppings build-up, and plan the layout.

Fixing the posts

Stainless steel posts are fixed into the surface at set intervals using nylon fixings. On stonework, these are drilled in with small rivets that don’t damage the masonry.

On some surfaces, posts can be glued into position using silicone adhesive or bonded with a specialist bracket, depending on the substrate.

Post height and spacing depend on the bird species and the width of the ledge. For pigeons, posts are typically around 75mm tall and spaced at up to 1.5 metres apart.

Running and tensioning the wire

Nylon-coated stainless steel wires are threaded through the posts and tensioned using small spring fittings at each end.

The springs maintain consistent tension regardless of temperature. This matter more than people expect because metal wire expands and contracts with the weather.

On wider surfaces, multiple parallel runs of wire can cover the full width.

The wire can also be run at different heights to create a more disruptive surface for larger birds like seagulls and gulls.

Once the wires are secured and tensioned, we test each section and check the full length of the installation for gaps. Birds are persistent. If there’s a way to perch, they’ll find it.

A discreet bird control system

The biggest advantage of bird post and wire over other deterrent systems is that you won’t see it.

From the ground, the stainless steel wires and posts are virtually invisible, even when you know they’re there.

For hotels, retail frontages, and any building where visible bird control would detract from the architecture, this type of bird deterrent system matters.

It also means you can prevent bird problems without affecting how the building looks to customers, tenants, or visitors. For businesses where first impressions count, that’s a real consideration.

Looking after the bird wire system

Bird wire deterrent systems are built to last.

Grade stainless steel posts and wires resist corrosion, and the nylon coating protects against UV degradation. A well-installed bird post and wire system will hold up for years in normal conditions.

The main thing to keep on top of is tension. Springs can loosen slightly over time, and any wire dislodged by debris or heavy bird contact may need re-tensioning.

We recommend an annual check, and we offer maintenance contracts for commercial clients.
