Black Rat Control (Rattus rattus)

Black rats – also known as ship rats or roof rats – are less common than brown rats in the UK but still pose significant problems, particularly in coastal areas and port cities.

Smaller and more slender than brown rats (around 200mm body length), black rats are excellent climbers with a pointed nose, large ears, sleek black or dark brown fur, and a tail longer than their body.

Their association with maritime trade means they’re most frequently found near docks, harbours, shipping facilities, warehouses storing imported goods, and commercial properties handling international cargo. Unlike brown rats which burrow, black rats prefer to nest in elevated locations – roof spaces, upper floors of buildings, warehouses, and wall cavities.

Black rats are historically notorious disease carriers – they were the primary vectors for the bubonic plague that devastated Europe in the 14th century. While plague is no longer a concern in the UK, these rodents still carry numerous pathogens and their presence in food storage or processing facilities poses serious health risks.

House mice measure just 70-100mm in body length (about the size of your thumb) with light brown or grey fur, large ears, small eyes, and a tail nearly as long as their body. Their diminutive size means they can squeeze through gaps as small as 6mm (the width of a pencil) – making it extremely difficult to rodent-proof properties against them.

One of the first signs of a mouse infestation that people notice is a distinctive, strong ammonia-like smell. This odour indicates a significant population, as mice constantly dribble urine to mark their territory as they move around your property.
