Rodent Control
If you’ve discovered evidence of rodents in your home or business, Clark Pest Control’s BPCA accredited technicians are here to provide fast, effective, and permanent solutions.
Rodent infestations are the most common and distressing reason people require pest control services throughout the UK. Finding rats, mice, or squirrels in your property is a genuinely frightening experience – and one that requires immediate professional action.
These pests carry serious health risks, spread dangerous diseases, contaminate food, cause extensive property damage, and pose significant fire hazards by chewing through electrical wiring. Research suggests that rodents are responsible for up to 25% of house fires in the UK every year.
At Clark Pest Control, we don’t just eliminate the rodents you can see – we identify how they’re entering your property, remove the entire population, and implement proven prevention measures to ensure they never return.
Why Rodents Are So Dangerous
Rodents are far more than just unpleasant to have around. They pose genuine threats to your health, safety, and property that escalate rapidly if left untreated.
Health Risks
Rats and mice carry numerous dangerous diseases that can be transmitted to humans through:
- Direct contact with rodents, their urine, or droppings
- Bites and scratches
- Contaminated food and surfaces
- Parasites like fleas and ticks that live in their fur
Some of the most serious diseases spread by rodents include Leptospirosis (Weil’s disease), Salmonella, Listeria, Hantavirus, and Typhus. These can cause severe illness and, in extreme cases, prove fatal without prompt medical treatment.
Fire Hazards
One of the most alarming dangers posed by rodent infestations is the fire risk. Rats, mice, and squirrels all have continuously growing front teeth that must be constantly worn down through gnawing. Unfortunately, they’re not selective about what they chew – and electrical cables are a frequent target.
When rodents strip the protective coating from live electrical wires, it creates short circuits and sparking that can ignite surrounding materials. Studies estimate that between 15-25% of house fires of unknown origin are caused by rodent damage to electrical wiring. This represents thousands of fires every year, with devastating consequences for families and businesses.

Property Damage
Beyond the fire risk, rodents cause extensive structural damage to properties. They chew through wooden beams, damage insulation, tear up loft materials for nesting, contaminate stored items, and can even compromise the structural integrity of buildings if left unchecked for long periods.
Squirrels are particularly destructive in this regard, using their powerful teeth to gnaw through roof cladding, fascias, and internal timbers. The repairs needed after a prolonged rodent infestation can run into thousands of pounds.
Mental Health Impact
Living with a rodent infestation takes a serious toll on mental wellbeing. The constant worry, disturbed sleep from nocturnal scurrying and scratching, the stress of knowing disease-carrying pests are in your home, and the embarrassment of having to explain the situation to visitors or tradespeople – all of this significantly impacts quality of life.
Many of our clients describe feeling unable to relax in their own homes until the rodent problem is completely resolved.
Our Rodent Control Services
Clark Pest Control provides comprehensive rodent control solutions for all common UK rodent species. Our approach combines immediate elimination of the current infestation with long-term prevention strategies to keep your property rodent-free.
Brown Rat Control (Rattus norvegicus)
Brown rats – also known as common rats, Norway rats, or sewer rats – are the most widespread rat species in the UK and the rodent we’re called out to deal with most frequently.
These large rodents can grow up to 250mm in body length (not including their long, scaly tail), with light brown to greyish fur, small ears, and a blunt muzzle. Despite their name, their tails are completely harmless, though their powerful teeth certainly aren’t.

Brown rats are incredibly adaptable and will live anywhere they can find shelter, water, and food. Urban areas, suburban homes, rural properties, commercial premises – they thrive in all environments. They’re particularly common near water sources like rivers, harbours, and drainage systems, but equally at home in city centres, parks, and residential areas.
These rodents are excellent burrowers and often create extensive tunnel systems in gardens, beneath sheds and outbuildings, and under foundations. They’re also strong swimmers and can enter properties through damaged drainage pipes and toilet systems.
Our brown rat control service includes:
- Thorough property inspection to identify entry points and activity areas
- Strategic placement of professional-grade rodenticides in tamper-proof bait stations
- Installation of traps in appropriate locations
- Rodent proofing work to seal entry points
- Follow-up visits to monitor effectiveness and replenish treatments
- Removal of dead rodents and advice on preventing future infestations
Black Rat Control (Rattus rattus)
Black rats – also known as ship rats or roof rats – are less common than brown rats in the UK but still pose significant problems, particularly in coastal areas and port cities.
Smaller and more slender than brown rats (around 200mm body length), black rats are excellent climbers with a pointed nose, large ears, sleek black or dark brown fur, and a tail longer than their body.

Their association with maritime trade means they’re most frequently found near docks, harbours, shipping facilities, warehouses storing imported goods, and commercial properties handling international cargo. Unlike brown rats which burrow, black rats prefer to nest in elevated locations – roof spaces, upper floors of buildings, warehouses, and wall cavities.
Black rats are historically notorious disease carriers – they were the primary vectors for the bubonic plague that devastated Europe in the 14th century. While plague is no longer a concern in the UK, these rodents still carry numerous pathogens and their presence in food storage or processing facilities poses serious health risks.
Our black rat control specialists understand the unique behaviours of this species and adapt treatment strategies accordingly, focusing on elevated treatment points and climbing routes rather than ground-level baiting alone.
House Mouse Control (Mus musculus)
Don’t be fooled by their small size and relatively cute appearance – house mice are just as problematic as their larger rodent cousins and often more challenging to eliminate completely.
House mice measure just 70-100mm in body length (about the size of your thumb) with light brown or grey fur, large ears, small eyes, and a tail nearly as long as their body. Their diminutive size means they can squeeze through gaps as small as 6mm (the width of a pencil) – making it extremely difficult to rodent-proof properties against them.

One of the first signs of a mouse infestation that people notice is a distinctive, strong ammonia-like smell. This odour indicates a significant population, as mice constantly dribble urine to mark their territory as they move around your property.
House mice breed at an alarming rate. A single female can produce 5-10 litters per year with 5-6 pups in each litter. Do the maths and you’ll see how quickly a couple of mice can become a serious infestation if not dealt with immediately.
Despite their size, house mice carry the same dangerous pathogens as rats – Salmonella, Hantavirus, Leptospirosis, and more. They contaminate far more food than they actually consume by urinating and defecating as they investigate cupboards and storage areas.
For businesses – particularly restaurants, cafes, hotels, and food retailers – even a single mouse sighting can be catastrophic. Social media moves fast, and a photo of a mouse in your establishment can destroy your reputation overnight.
Our mouse control service uses a combination of rodenticides, snap traps, and live traps positioned strategically based on evidence of mouse activity (droppings, gnaw marks, grease marks, and runs). We also provide comprehensive advice on food storage, waste management, and proofing measures to prevent future problems.
Grey Squirrel Control (Sciurus carolinensis)
Many people are surprised to learn that grey squirrels are classified as rodents and can cause serious pest problems. While they look charming bounding through your local park with their bushy tails and acrobatic antics, they’re far less endearing when they’ve invaded your loft at 3am.

Grey squirrels are non-native invasive species introduced to the UK in the 19th century. They’ve since driven our native red squirrels to near extinction across most of England, Scotland, and Wales, and cause millions of pounds worth of damage to properties and woodland every year.
Measuring around 250mm in body length with distinctive grey fur (sometimes with brown tinges), a bushy tail, and a pale belly, these “tree rats” are expert climbers with powerful teeth that require constant gnawing to keep them worn down.
When grey squirrels enter domestic properties, they typically nest in loft spaces or wall cavities. The noise they make is considerable – constant scratching, scurrying, and loud gnawing sounds that are particularly disruptive at dawn and dusk when squirrels are most active. This severely impacts sleep quality and makes working from home almost impossible.
The property damage caused by squirrels is extensive. They chew through:
- Roof timbers and supporting beams
- Electrical cables (creating serious fire risks)
- Water pipes and plumbing
- Insulation materials
- Stored items in lofts
- Roof cladding and fascias to gain entry
It’s also worth noting that under UK law, it’s illegal to release grey squirrels once they’ve been trapped (due to their invasive species status and the threat they pose to red squirrels). This means DIY live-catch trapping is not a legal option – you must use a licensed pest control professional.
Our squirrel control service includes humane trapping, removal, proofing work to seal entry points, and repairs to damage where appropriate. We work efficiently to resolve squirrel problems while ensuring full compliance with wildlife legislation.
