Solar Panel Bird Proofing
Solar panels are one of the best investments you can make for your property. But the gap between your panels and the roof creates the perfect nesting spot for pigeons and other birds, and once they move in, the problems start quickly.
Solar panel bird proofing stops pigeons and birds from gaining access to the space beneath the panels. It protects your solar PV system from bird droppings, nesting material, and wiring damage, and it prevents the problem from getting worse over time.
Why pigeons nest under solar panels
The space underneath the panels is warm, sheltered, and hidden from predators. For pigeons looking for somewhere to roost and breed, it’s a perfect nesting site. The panels block wind and rain from above, and the heat they generate makes the gap beneath them comfortable no matter the weather
Once a pair of pigeons finds your rooftop, they’ll keep coming back due to their homing instinct. A single pair can produce up to six broods a year, causing immense damage to your panels. What starts as a minor pigeon problem can become a full colony within a couple of years.
The damage birds cause to solar panel systems
Bird droppings
Bird droppings are acidic. They cause corrosion on panel surfaces, roof tiles, and guttering. A heavy build-up of droppings on the panels themselves blocks sunlight from reaching the cells, which reduces the output of the whole system and shortens its lifespan.
Nesting materials
Nesting material (twigs, feathers, debris) packs into gaps around panel edges and blocks gutters and drainage channels. This leads to water damage on your roof and can affect the longevity of the solar installation itself.
Damage to wires
Cable and wiring damage is the risk most people don’t expect.
Birds peck at the wiring and cables beneath the panels, which creates electrical faults and a genuine fire risk. If the wiring is compromised, your warranty could be affected and the whole system may need inspection.
Noise disturbance
Noise is constant once a colony establishes. Cooing, scratching, and movement directly above your ceiling starts early and doesn’t stop.
Secondary pest problems
Bird nests attract mites, fleas, and beetles, which can find their way into your property and create a wider pest control issue.
How solar panel bird-proofing works
The goal is simple. Solar panel bird proofing creates a physical barrier that stops pigeons and birds from gaining access to the space underneath the panels, without affecting how the panels perform. We use a combination of solar mesh, clips, and bird spikes depending on what your installation needs.
Survey and assessment
Clark Pest Control always start with a free survey.
One of our technicians will inspect your roof, assess the extent of any nesting under the panels, identify the species involved, and check for damage to wiring and cables.
We also check for active nests with eggs or chicks. Under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it’s illegal to disturb nesting birds while they’re breeding, so timing matters. We’ll advise on the best approach depending on what we find.
Clearing and cleaning
Before we install any proofing, we clear out all existing nesting material, bird droppings, and debris from beneath the panels. This step matters. Fitting mesh over old nesting material just traps the mess and can attract mites and other pests to your home.
We dispose of all waste safely.
Pigeon droppings carry health risks including psittacosis, salmonella, and E. coli, so proper handling and a safe environment for your household are a precaution we always take seriously.
Solar mesh and spike installation
We fit UV-stabilised, stainless steel or PVC-coated solar mesh around the full perimeter of your solar panel array, closing off every gap where birds could get in. The mesh is secured using specialist clips that attach directly to the panel frames.
Unlike netting, which can sag and trap birds, rigid solar mesh creates a permanent barrier that keeps pigeons out without any risk to the birds themselves. And because nothing is drilled into the panels or the roof, you can maintain your panels without removing the proofing.
This is a non-penetrating system built from high-quality materials.
Nothing is glued, screwed, or bolted through your panels, so your warranty stays intact. The panels can still be accessed for maintenance if needed, and the mesh is virtually invisible from ground level.
Where additional deterrence is needed, we also install bird spikes along ridge tiles, guttering, or other roosting points on the rooftop. Spikes prevent birds from landing and roosting in the areas around your solar PV installation, which reduces the chance of them testing the mesh for weak points.
Final check once complete
Once the installation is complete, we inspect every edge and join to make sure there are no gaps. Pigeons are persistent, and if there’s a way in, they’ll find it.
We also check that the solar mesh isn’t interfering with panel ventilation. Airflow underneath the panels is part of how they regulate temperature and maintain efficiency, so getting this right protects the longevity of your whole system.
Do you need scaffolding?
It depends on the property.
Some single-storey roofs or low-pitched extensions can be accessed safely with ladders and roof equipment. But for some two-storey homes and homes with difficult access to the roof, scaffolding is needed to give our technicians safe, stable access to work around the panels properly.
We arrange the scaffolding as part of the job. You don’t need to organise it separately or deal with a scaffolding company yourself. We’ll confirm what’s needed after the free survey.
If you’re having solar panels installed soon, it’s worth getting the bird proofing done at the same time. The scaffolding is already up, and we’re happy to coordinate with your solar installer to get the mesh fitted during the original installation. It’s a sensible precaution that saves a return visit later.

Why use a pest control specialist for solar panel protection
Some solar panel installers offer pigeon proofing as an add-on. Some general handymen offer it too.
The difference is that a pest control specialist understands bird and pigeon behaviour, not just the panels.
We know where pigeons will try to regain access, what proofing methods hold up long term, and how to handle contaminated waste from an established nesting site. We also know the law around protected species and nesting seasons.
We carry out bird control work every day, and are experts at keeping property’s free of bird issues.
As a BPCA-accredited company, our technicians are trained in preventing birds from nesting under solar panels, not just fitting mesh. That matters when the job involves pigeons nesting on a roof, health hazards from droppings, and legal requirements around wildlife.
Protect your solar investment
Solar panels are designed to last 25 years or more, but that lifespan depends on keeping them in good condition.
Pigeon and bird damage is one of the most common threats to solar installations across Scotland and Northern England, and it’s entirely preventable with the right proofing.
Protect your solar panels now and you avoid costly repairs, reduced output, and the hassle of dealing with an established colony later. Solar panel pigeon proofing is a one-off job that protects your investment for the long term.
Areas our pest control team cover
We have local branches across Scotland and Northern England, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Newcastle, Sunderland, and County Durham. Our technicians are local, which means we can respond quickly, we know the area, and we know the local bird behaviour.
If you’ve noticed pigeons on your rooftop or heard scratching beneath the panels, it’s worth getting it checked before a full colony moves in and nesting season is underway.
