Signs of a bird infestation

Bird droppings

Look for bird droppings accumulating on ledges, windowsills, walkways, or around entry points.

Pigeon droppings and pigeon guano build up quickly and are one of the clearest indicators that birds are roosting nearby.

Nesting materials

Nesting materials (twigs, feathers, debris) around gutters, eaves, soffits, or under solar panels are another sign. You might also hear scratching, cooing, or flapping from loft spaces, especially at dawn and dusk.

Types of bird pest in the UK

Different bird species cause different problems, and the right control measures depend on what you’re dealing with. These are the pest birds we encounter most often.

Feral pigeons

The feral pigeon is the most common pest bird in the UK. They roost on ledges, signage, flat roofs, and under solar panels, and they’ll nest in any sheltered gap they can find.

A single pair can produce up to six broods a year, and pigeon droppings accumulate fast.

Gulls

Starlings and sparrows

All wild birds in the UK are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. That means you can’t simply remove nests, destroy eggs, or harm birds without the appropriate licence. Even common pest species like pigeons and gulls are covered by bird protection legislation.
