bird gel

Bird Gel

Some buildings can’t have spikes on the ledges. Some can’t have netting across the facade. But the nuisance birds still need to go.

Bird Free fire gel is a bird repellent gel that keeps birds away from your property without harming them.

Low-profile dishes of specially formulated gel are applied to surfaces where pest birds land, and to the birds, those surfaces look like they’re on fire.

The dishes are invisible from ground level, so anybody walking past will never even suspect their presence.

How Bird Free gel works

Bird Free gel targets three of a bird’s senses at once, which is what makes it a highly effective bird deterrent compared to simpler products like decoys or reflective tape.

Not to worry, the product is non-toxic and doesn’t trap or harm them. Birds just dislike the sensation, avoid the surface, and won’t return.

Sight

Birds can see ultraviolet light that humans can’t. The gel reflects UV in a pattern that appears to birds as flames.

When a pigeon or gull approaches a treated ledge, what they see looks like fire. They will be too cautious to land, and perch somewhere else.

Smell

The gel contains peppermint oil, which birds can find unpleasant.

Touch

Bird gel has a sticky, high-viscosity texture.

If a bird does make contact with it (usually when returning to a recently treated nesting site), the sticky feel on their feet is enough to stop them coming back.

Where we install Bird Free gel

Bird Free gel suits any location where other deterrents would be too visible or where permission for physical fixings is difficult to get.

Our pest controllers regularly apply it on:

  • Listed buildings and heritage stonework
  • Hotel facades and entrance canopies
  • Shop signage and retail frontages
  • Ornamental ledges and window surrounds
  • Churches, public buildings, and civic architecture
  • Any building where conservation officers have ruled out spikes or netting

The gel can be installed alongside other bird control methods too. This provides extra protection from pest bird species.

The advantage of an invisible product

Each dish is a small, low-profile container roughly the size of a jar lid.

They’re fixed to the surface in a line, spaced at intervals that depend on the width of the ledge and the bird species being deterred.

From the ground, they’re practically invisible.

On listed building where the council won’t allow spikes, gel gives you effective bird control without altering the building’s appearance whilst protecting the building from a buildup of damaging, corrosive droppings. That’s the whole point.

How we install bird repellent gel

We always start with a free survey.

Bird Free gel only works properly on a clean surface, so if there’s an existing build-up of guano, nest material, or debris, we carry out a full removal and clean the area first. This helps protect the building from ongoing damage caused by droppings and reduces the risk of secondary infestations.

Once the surface is prepared, the dishes are fixed in place using a suitable adhesive.

On stonework, we use products that won’t stain or damage the masonry. The whole installation is non-invasive, with nothing drilled or bolted into the building.

We plan the dish layout during the survey based on where birds are landing, which species are involved, and the width and profile of each surface. Getting the spacing right is what makes the difference between gel that works and gel that birds simply land between.

Long lasting protection in any environment

Bird Free gel is formulated to be durable and waterproof.

Rain, wind, frost, and UV exposure don’t break it down the way they would with most adhesive products. Left undisturbed, a properly installed application will remain completely effective for at least five years, and often longer.

The product works indoors and outdoors and doesn’t degrade in exposed locations.

When the dishes eventually need replacing, they come off cleanly with no residue and no damage to the surface or structure of the building.

What bird gel won’t do

Bird Free gel deters birds from landing on treated surfaces. But it doesn’t physically exclude them from an area the way netting does, and it won’t manage a heavily established infestation on its own.

If you’ve got dozens of pigeons nesting in a roof space, gel on the external ledges won’t solve that.

You’d need the nesting site cleared and treated first, and then gel can help keep birds away from the building long term.

For well-established colonies, we may suggest other forms of bird deterrents that physically stop birds from landing or nesting, or a combined approach using multiple deterrent methods.

HSE authorised

Bird Free is the only bird repellent gel authorised for use in the UK by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). It was authorised on the basis of proven efficacy in controlled field tests.

That’s why we use HSE-authorised Bird Free fire gel on every installation.
