What bird pest control solutions are available?
Clark Pest Control provide a huge range of bird proofing solutions and preventative measures to tackle any bird pest problem as fast as possible and prevent birds from ever returning to the property again.
These methods have been tried and tested over many years, using real life pest control experiences to ensure they are as effective as possible.
Bird Netting
Netting is an extremely effective way to prevent pest birds from reaching common roosting areas such as rooftops and warehouse ceilings.
Coming in a range of different shapes, sizes, and materials, netting is fully customisable and comes with smart UV light technology to maximise the light which reaches the ground whilst eliminating harmful UV rays.
Bird Spikes
Alongside netting, bird spikes are possible the most effective deterrent that you can install on your property to prevent the invasion of a pest bird species.
Bird “spikes” are actually more like blunt metal prongs that do not harm or kill birds, which would be a breach of welfare laws but stop large birds such as gulls and pigeons from settling on a rooftop, sign, or balcony.
These spikes come on flexible polycarbonate strips that can be adapted to fit on a range of surfaces, from stone to wood, and are extremely discreet so customers and passers by will not notice that you even have them installed.
Bird Wire Systems
Looking for a discreet bird deterrent? Bird wire systems feature durable posts and tensioned wires that effectively stop birds from landing.
They are designed to be hard to see from ground level, making them perfect for heritage and listed buildings, as well as hotels and shops where appearance matters.Â
Specialised Methods
If these prevention measures are unsuccessful or installing permanent deterrents on your property is not an option there are some more specialised methods of bird removal that we offer including:
- Falconry
- Bird trapping
- Bird shooting – Carried out solely by trained marksmen in a safe environment.
- Bird Gel – Authorised gel that looks like fire to birds while being discreet to humans.
- Decoy Predators – Hawk kites, motion detecting sprinklers, or similar.
- Solar Panel Bird Proofing – Keep your property and panels save from pest bird populations with effective proofing measures. Â

What problems can birds cause?
Having a population of pest birds roosting on your property can have a wide range of negative effects.
Some of the biggest risks associated with birds in urban areas include:
- Spreading diseases such as salmonella and psittacosis
- Damaging property
- Reducing workplace safety by creating slippery surfaces
- Increasing the risk of further pest activity such as insects and rodents
- Loud noise and general disruption to quality of life
Spreading diseases
Birds such as feral pigeons and gulls can spread a huge number of different pathogens that can cause health problems if transferred to humans.
These diseases are spread to humans through direct contact with birds themselves (relatively rare), through surface contact with bird faeces, and by breathing in dust that has been contaminated with bird feathers or faeces.
Almost half of all feral pigeons in the UK, for example, carry a bacteria called Chlamydia psittaci that, when transferred to humans, can lead to an infection known as Ornithosis.
This infection has a number of nasty symptoms including muscle weakness, dizziness, and fever.
Other diseases spread by pest birds in the UK include Salmonella – a bacterial infection causing diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and nausea – and Histoplasmosis – a fungal disease that thrives in damp areas and leads to a dry cough, chills, and cramps.
If you run a commercial premises and let a bird problem go untreated for a significant period, you are risking the health and wellbeing of your staff and if they fall ill as a result you may face legal repercussions.
To avoid this you should call Clark Pest Control as soon as you see evidence of pest activity and join our numerous, bird free, satisfied commercial clients.
Damaging property
Bird faeces is extremely corrosive in nature and, over time, a significant quantity can erode almost any surface, including solid stone.
It also significantly increases the rusting process of metal, leading to leakages and even the collapse of structural beams and roofing.
A single layer of guano from gulls or feral pigeons on your can slash the lifespan of your property’s roof by as much as 50%.
Trust Clark Pest Control’s guano cleaning services to help protect your property and surrounding health.Â
Birds often choose to make their nests in drainpipes or inside ventilation shafts which can cause blockages leading to flooding and possible irreversible water damage to property.
Bird droppings can also wear away steps and make surfaces slippery which may lead to workplace accidents and as a business owner you could find yourself paying thousands in repairs, compensation, and legal fees.
Attracting other pests
Birds cause plenty of damage to health and property on their own, but unfortunately, their presence can also result in a number of other pest species entering your home.
Fleas, bed bugs, and other blood sucking insects find birds to be an ideal food source and can be carried into your property’s attic or cavity space on their back before spreading far and wide targeting fabrics, pets, and humans alike.
Damp loving invertebrates such as cockroaches and flying insects are also attracted to bird dropping covered surfaces.
Given that like most other pests that invade human inhabited property, birds seek shelter and warmth, there is potential that a secondary infestation may be found including rodents (rats, mice, and grey squirrels) wasps, other flying insects, or common garden ants.
At Clark Pest Control our Scotland based technicians are trained and ready to tackle whatever pest species they are faced with and our team prides ourselves on offering both our commercial and domestic clients with cost effective solutions, tackling multiple pest infestations with no additional call out fees.
Which pest bird species cause the most problems?
Our commercial and domestic customers in Aberdeen, and across the North East most frequently face bird control issues involving the following species:
- Feral pigeons (Columba livia)
- Gulls (Laridae)
- Starlings (Sturnus vulgaris)Â
- House Sparrows (Passer domesticus)
- Canada Goose (Branta canadensis)
- Crows (Corvidae)
Gulls (Laridae)
Gulls, also known as seagulls, are a significant problem in urban areas across the UK as they are extremely hard to get rid of once they settle.
They will often return to the same nesting site every year and given that they can live for as long as 25 years can be a real long term nuisance if left to their own devices.
They can also grow extremely large, up to 80cm, and are very noisy obnoxious neighbours to live with.
During breeding season (late-May to Early June) they are also extremely aggressive and will screech and dive towards humans who come too close.
Feral Pigeons (Columbia Livia)
Seen in city centres and urban areas across the UK, feral pigeons alone can carry as many as 110 different pathogens, meaning they are some of the most prolific disease spreaders of any bird species.
Populations of pigeons on or in domestic homes or commercial buildings will multiply at a ferocious rate with females producing up to 7 broods of 1-3 eggs every year.
Besides spreading diseases pigeon faeces is also dangerous as it causes surfaces to become slippery and increases the chances of accidents.
Given that just one pigeon can produce 12kg of guano in a single year it does not take a large population of pigeons to cause a hazardous environment.
