Cockroaches might look like fairly standard beetle-like insects, but this is far from the truth. They have evolved over millions of years to be incredibly talented survivors that can survive and thrive in even the most brutal conditions. There are several thousand species of cockroaches throughout the world, but only four of them are common UK pests. These are:

  • German cockroaches
  • American cockroach
  • Oriental cockroach
  • Asian cockroach

In the UK, the German roach is by far the most common and can be identified by its light brown hue and the two stripes that run along its torso. Domestic settings are ideal for these creatures, and getting rid of them once they are settled in takes experience and knowledge.

Breeding

German cockroaches multiply at an alarming rate and an infestation will become critical very quickly. One female cockroach can produce around 200-300 cockroaches throughout their lifetime, especially during warm summer weather (25-30 C).

Each egg sac can hatch 30-50 eggs every few weeks, with these young going on to produce their own eggs soon after. Within the warm and calm environment of a humid home, you could be hosting a cockroach factory without even realizing it until the infestation is well and truly established.

These insects carry their eggs with them and release them when the nymphs are ready to merge. Nymphs, or baby roaches, are usually dark-coloured with a light-coloured stripe. They reach maturity in about 40-125 days. An adult is about 12-15mm long and can live anywhere from a few months to a couple of years.

Food

These insects are mainly omnivorous and will feed of waste of human beings, starches, rubbish, plants, fruits, vegetables and meat. They also feed on other materials found around the household like leather, clothes, starch in bookbinding, and flakes of dried skin.

Behavior

Since they are nocturnal in nature, they are inactive during the day. During the daytime, they will hide in the dark, quiet environments such as corners of doors, sub-floors, cupboards, kitchen sinks, under drawers, behind appliances, near plumbing fixtures and cracks/crawlspaces in various places.

Usually, you will not see them in the daytime unless there is a large population, but many people will come across them unexpectedly in the night, suddenly realising there is a problem.
